A dwarf globe shaped barberry with deep purple, velvety foliage. New growth is red giving the shrub an interesting accent. Fruit is red and sparse. Its small size makes it ideal for the perennial border or the front of a shrub border. Tolerates dry conditions well.

A compact form of Clethra. Valued for its summer flower, tolerance of heavy shade, and moist situations. Attractive lustrous deep green foliage. 1994 PA Gold Medal Award Winner.

An excellent red stem dogwood that provides beautiful color in winter. Porcelain-blue fruits. Shade tolerant. Very adaptable.

This red stemmed shrub can be used as a coarse groundcover or in a shrub border. Prefers moist to wet soil and sun or partial shade. White flower.

Deep golden yellow flowers of this forsythia cover the branches in April. A dense plant with an upright habit, it tolerates city conditions well. It may experience dieback of flower buds in zone 4, but performs well in both sun or light shade. Rarely to never fed on by Japanese beetles.

Blooms in July and August. Very showy, large, conical, double white flowers change to pink-bronze towards autumn. Flowers are useful for dried arrangements. Rarely to never fed on by Japanese beetles.

Free-blooming, blue, globe-shaped flowers similar to Hydrangea Snowhill. Blooms July-August. Sun or partial shade. Color is best in acid soils. In neutral soils both pink and blue flowers may be present.

Improved selection of Hydrangea arborescens 'Grandiflora'. White flower heads are more erect than 'Grandiflora'. Thrives in shade. Flowers may be small the first year, normal size by the second year. 2001 PA Gold Medal Award Winner. Rarely to never fed on by Japanese beetles.

This compact, prolific bloomer was selected at Bailey Nurseries for its dwarf habit and excellent flowering. The double white flowers are extremely fragrant.

An excellent potentilla from Holland with few insect or disease problems. Large, pure white flowers bloom from early spring to late fall. Good for foundation plantings or low hedges.

Hardiest of the pussy willows. Large shrub or small tree up to 20 feet with silvery catkins appearing before leaves. Deep brown branches.

White flowers in late June. Fruits, blue to black, in large clusters. Excellent for pies, jam and elderberry wine. Hardy native plant. Use in background and wildlife plantings. A clone of S. canadensis selected for its large fruit by William W. Adams of Union Springs, NY. Fruit set is normally improved when more than one cultivar is used, such as 'York'.

An excellent dwarf shrub, with dense, dark green foliage and masses of pure white flowers in May.

An old cultivar developed in 1883, this is still one of the best purples available. Its panicle-like thyrses of single, red-purple flowers are produced in early June. Rarely to never fed on by Japanese beetles.

One of the earlier French hybrids, this lilac is still popular. It bears smaller panicles of purple buds that turn to magenta double flowers as they open for a fabulous show! Rarely to never fed on by Japanese beetles.

A unique dwarf lilac hybrid with an attractive display of light lavender-pink flowers, reminiscent of S. meyeri, one of its parents, but with a reblooming tendency, more typical of S. microphylla, another one of its parents. Delicate, fragrant blossoms appear in May and sporadically thereafter into fall. Will thrive in warmer zones, though southern gardens may only get a flush of rebloom in the fall.

This dwarf variety has an excellent uniform habit and red-purple buds that open to fragrant, single, pale lilac flowers. Previously known as Syringa palibiniana, it bears profuse blooms at an early age. 2000 Gold Medal Plant Award winner.

Beautiful flowers and outstanding fragrance. Pink to reddish buds open to white blossoms in late April and May. Best planted where the fragrance can be enjoyed.

Blue-black fruits. White, flat-topped flowers in May. Native species with great durability. Good winter food for birds. Excellent in shade, sun, moist or dry soils. Very hardy.

A popular shrub. Large, double white flowers bloom profusely in April-May. Also known as Viburnum opulus 'Sterile'.

This compact form of American cranberrybush was discovered by Pat Perkins at Bailey Nurseries. Formerly called Compact American cranberrybush, this hardy shrub has beautiful foliage that offers a slight red edge when new, then turns a deep red in fall. Does not flower or fruit at a young age and only lightly there after.

A National Arboretum introduction with deep green foliage and dense, compact habit of growth. Abundant, yellow-white inflorescenses in spring followed by brilliant red fruit in fall that advances to black. Tolerant of hot, dry locations.

Developed in France, this lovely variegated weigela has dark red flowers that contrast nicely with the yellow and green foliage. This is a real standout in the garden.
