Quercus acutissima

Sawtooth Oak is named for the bristle like teeth that run along the Chestnut-like narrow leaves. A large tree with a broadly pyramidal form in youth, spreading to a broad and rounded form as it matures. The clean foliage emerges yellow in the spring, then darkens to lustrous green in the summer. In the fall, it returns to shades of yellow to golden brown and may be persistent into the winter. Grows rapidly especially in the southern states. Acorns are produced in alternate years, with the spiny cap covering up to two-thirds of the acorn. The bark is a dark grey to black, developing a corky ridge as it matures. Tolerant of heat and a wide range of soils.
