Ruby Horsechestnut is a cultivar that is know for its dark rosy red flowers with yellow throats that are born in clusters of large panicles in late spring and early summer. Slightly prickly and husky fruits follow containing 2-3 poisonous nuts. The serrulate dark green leaves have a red mid-rib. A broad, rounded, and dense shade tree, it prefers deep well drained soils, but is adaptable to a wide range. Named to honor Pierre Louis Briot, the nurseryman at Trianon-Versailles near Paris, France in 1858.
